11 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Your Libraries

Outside the Lines - Libraries Reintroduced

Yes, we get pumped about books. No, we don't read all day long.

The Garfield County Libraries are participating in a week-long celebration (September 13-19) of all the amazing things taking place in libraries all over the world. Celebrate with us by learning a little more about what your hometown libraries are doing to engage our communities and get "Outside the Lines."

1. We aren't all librarians. We are teachers, past AmeriCorps volunteers, FBI agents, ski lift operators, non-profit experts, certified public accountants, photographers, musicians, web developers, belly dancers, authors, and masseurs, among many other things.

2. You can learn to speak Gaelic. or Farsi. or maybe a little Pirate. Grab your library card and get started with Mango Languages.

3. The Garfield County Libraries own over 1 million items. Through the Marmot Library Consortium and your library card, you can order over 1.7 million titles from 27 other Colorado libraries to be delivered to your home library branch. Through Prospector, you can order over 12 million titles from libraries all over Colorado and Wyoming. Whoa.

4. There are no stupid questions. Ask us! We might have an answer. Or we can help you find the answer.

5. Prepping to take a career test? Or brushing up on skills before college entrance exams? Learning Express Library has flash cards, practice tests, and eBooks to help you pass with ease. Learn more:

6. Kids receive the foundation of their learning in schools, but it is the out-of-school informal learning experiences that makes the difference in transforming our students into career-ready adults. Oftentimes, these learning opportunities are limited because of costs associated with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), but the library provides free access to STEM learning through numerous, hands-on STEM-based programs at all six library branches. Who doesn't like playing with robots?

7. Starting a business? Want to learn more about buying your first home? Please, don't ever just Google these things. With your library card, access Legal Information Reference Center from home or at the library. Access NOLO's popular essential guides and tons of legal forms available for download (estate planning, disputes, financial planning, business incorporation, etc.)

8. The Garfield County Public Library Foundation provides a bag with a library card application and board book to families with newborns at the child’s first well-visit at clinics across Garfield County. Babies love books. Books for Babies!

9. You’re excited about that hot bestseller and that classic sci-fi series you just discovered? We’re excited, too.

10. We love #allthetechnology! iPads, Chromebooks, Kindle eReaders, 3D printers, robots, and more. You can also receive personalized tech help on your device with one of our skilled librarians. They can help you get started with downloading eBooks, digital magazines, and can even help you understand your device a little bit better. We don’t know everything, but we can help you find the answer you need!

11. It’s Library Card Sign Up month. Free replacements are available through the end of September if you’ve lost your card or would like one of our new snazzy ones. Never had one before? Register online and stop by the library with a photo ID to pick up your card. It’s so easy!

Your libraries miss you and we want you to be a part of all the exciting things we have happening everyday. Visit us online 24/7 at gcpld.org or at any of our 6 branches across the county.
